About

We’re arty, dammit!

Betty:

Lindsey Smolensky is attempting to embrace her inner Betty.  When people comment on her body she tends to deflect the comments with humor, consequently deflecting some of her discomfort as well.  Lindsey is also hoping to regain some ownership of her body since her illness (Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome) has taken command.  It’s actually quite unnerving and saddening to feel no connection to your own body: to feel that it’s merely a container.  Lindsey’s working very hard toward cracking that feeling.

Lindsey is a painter, a photographer, and sometimes butcher of the English language.  She is obsessed with live music, playing softball, anything made from crushed ice, avocados, obscure arty publications, vintage anything, design blogs, giving old furniture new life, the smell of campfire, textiles, art supply stores, good poetry, and cuddling.  Lindsey dreams of one day owning lots of land in the city so she may build an artists’ compound with her friends, complete with a pony and a duck.

Bear:

Sean Kramer took his time, but has finally embraced himself as a “bear.”  The idea of someone being attracted to a larger, hairy man was lost on him for a while until he came out.  After accepting who he is, he has grown more comfortable in his own body and surroundings.

Sean is a photographer and over the years has dabbled in writing and painting.  During time away from his “real” job, you can find him in a number of different places.  Softball has become a great and favorite pastime (also where he met “Betty”).  He also has a love of movies, music, walking in Houston’s Memorial Park, hanging out with friends, being one hell of an uncle, and traveling.

From Urbandictionary.com:

Betty:

1.)  Slang term for a girl who associates with the punk rock/skateboarding/alternative subculture(s). The term originates from pin-up model Bettie Page’s signature haircut with short bangs, a common fashion trait for girls in these subcultures.

2.)  Betty is the term used to describe an amazing person who you can depend on. Although Betty is a common term referring to “hot surfer chick,” Betty is also a term for “sweet and loving girl.” The more you get to know her, the more you love being around her. She has a good sense of humor and has a cute laugh. She’s chill yet hard working as well as kind and considerate. Betty lights up the room and lights up my life. She’s always happy and cheerful. She’s also cuddly, independent and smart. All the guys have secret crushes on her even though she doesn’t realize it. She appreciates the simple things in life and can make anything good out of a bad situation.

Bear:

1.) A term used by gay men to describe a husky, large man with a lot of body hair.

2.) The most common definition of a “bear” is a man who is hairy, has facial hair, and a cuddly body. However, the word “Bear” means many things to different people, even within the bear movement. Many men who do not have one or all of these characteristics define themselves as bears, making the term a very loose one. Suffice it to say, “bear” is often defined as more of an attitude than anything else – a sense of comfort with our natural masculinity and bodies that is not slavish to the vogues of male attractiveness that is so common in gay circles and the culture at large.
